An Occupational Therapist or similar will be able to help identify where it may be better to ignore the guidelines and go with a more customized solution for your parents and the needs they have personally. Individuals may have needs that differ from the heights and distances set out in the guidelines based on physical size and abilities. ![]() I suggest this because while the ADA guidelines are very good, they are GUIDELINES and written to try to cover a broad range of needs. Many health insurance companies will pay for what is called a 'home check' around here, where they come and make suggestion to make the home safer for elderly or disabled people to navigate, including suggestions on positioning grab rails and the like they may be willing to pay for something similar to give you advice prior to building, also. (Heck, with the range of styles now, I'd put at least one in any shower area because anyone can slip.) That said, for the original poster, since you have specific people in mind, I'd really recommend consulting not just an expert in ADA design, but also an Occupational Therapist. I know too many people who've developed health problems or gotten injuries where the assistance is helpful. If I was doing a new build I'd do similarly and have the walls beefed up in 'standard' areas like near the toilet even if I didn't intend on putting grab bars in right away. Definitely when we redo the bathrooms (they're both on the list for eventual improvement) we are going to put in some blocking for proper grab bars in reasonable places it's just better to get it in there while you have access than to have to rip things open later to do it. I didn't actually put them in, but I know a fairly impressive size hole was necessary, they use more than the standard expansion bolts you get for shelving and that sort of thing. Ours were put in mostly as a balance aid for someone who has neuropathy in the feet so the actual load bearing they do isn't much, they mostly serve as a fixed reference point that is harder to accidentally pull off the wall than standard bathroom fittings.
